摘要
We report both experimental and theoretical findings on the charge states and energy loss of laser-accelerated quasi-monoenergetic carbon ions of 4.46 MeV penetrating through a foam target. The quasi-monoenergetic ions enabled us to measure the average charge state and energy loss within a single laser shot. The ion energy is in the Bragg Peak regime, where different theoretical models often yield discrepant predictions for charge state and energy loss. For our experimental beam-target scenario, most semiempirical formulas obviously deviate from the measured average charge state, while SRIM and LISE databases overestimate energy loss. By calculating the cross section of electron capture and loss, and solving the rate equations, the charge states distribution and energy loss along penetration depth are obtained. The calculated average charge state and energy loss agree with the experiment. These findings provide the verification of commonly used theoretical models, especially near Bragg peak regime.
